PRANAYAMA SERIES
with Kathleen Sheets
every Thursday night, September 16-October 21, from 6:45-
7:45pm, $75 for the series
You are requested to attend all sessions if possible,
as the classes build upon each other.
Prana- Breath; Ayama- Regulation. Pranayama is the fourth limb of Patanjali's 8 limb path, "the body steady in asana can begin pranayama". In this 6-week course we'll prepare the body to sit for pranayama, learn the bandhas & various breathing techniques. Practices may include Kapalabhati, Violma, Nadi Shodhana & Kumbhaka - retention.
Pranayama, the practice of ancient yogic breathing techniques, consciously controls the flow of breath, and thus enhances the flow of energy in the body. A regular, balanced pranayama practice increases prana (life energy), thereby inviting greater mental clarity, heightened healing potential and deeper self-understanding. Pranayama, like other yogic practices, is about being more fully alive and well, and is a particularly helpful in the preparation for meditation.
Patanjali's sutra 2.52 states: Pranyama removes the veil covering the light of knowledge & heralds the dawn of wisdom. If you are comfortable in asana and have a desire to move deeper in your yoga practice this course is for you.
Special Focus Workshop
BACKBENDING
with Kathleen Sheets
Sunday, September 19, 1-3pm, $25/student
Back bending asanas are energizing, challenging and best of all, very satisfying. Unfortunately, many students feel they are not "ready" to practice them or think of them as the least enjoyable part of the yoga class. However, everyone can learn to backbend and to progress to ever more challenging postures. Kathleen will show you how an understanding of the mechanics involved makes it possible for backbends to be accessible and fun. This workshop will look at various asanas related to backbending and the energetic effects that this creates in your practice. All levels of practice are welcome, even those who are new to yoga.
